From Melbourne, the drive is straightforward, roughly 250km and usually about 3 hours. The most effective route is the National/Western Freeway/M8 west toward Ballarat.

From Adelaide, Halls Gap/Budja Budja is a 5.5 hr drive about 460 km. The most direct route is via the National Highway/Western (A8) through Bordertown and Horsham before turning off onto the Halls Gap Road.

The roads are well-sealed and pass through classic grain and grazing country before the mountains rise suddenly ahead. It’s a good idea to stop for fuel or food in Ballarat or Horsham, the last major towns before Halls Gap.

Wama's approximate driving time to nearby regional towns:

  • 7 mins from Halls Gap town centre
  • 8 mins from Pomonal
  • 45 mins from Ararat
  • 50 mins from Horsham
  • 60 mins from Dunkeld
  • 90 mins from Ballarat

There are no public transport options to the site and very limited options in the region.

Plan a road trip and make the most of the region: explore trails, be awestruck by ancient rock art sites, visit a winery (or three), and end the day by staying with a local accommodation provider.
