From Melbourne, the drive is straightforward, roughly 250km and usually about 3 hours. The most effective route is the National/Western Freeway/M8 west toward Ballarat.
From Adelaide, Halls Gap/Budja Budja is a 5.5 hr drive about 460 km. The most direct route is via the National Highway/Western (A8) through Bordertown and Horsham before turning off onto the Halls Gap Road.
The roads are well-sealed and pass through classic grain and grazing country before the mountains rise suddenly ahead. It’s a good idea to stop for fuel or food in Ballarat or Horsham, the last major towns before Halls Gap.
